Details

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic amino acid derived from lysine. When applied topically, it disrupts specific pathways in the skin that can lead to discoloration, such as dark spots and brown or gray patches. It's especially beneficial for skin prone to melasma. Additionally, tranexamic acid may help the skin’s surface become more resilient to UV damage, contributing to a youthful appearance—though sunscreen remains essential for full protection.

Research, including double-blind comparative studies, has demonstrated that tranexamic acid in concentrations of 2-5% can produce results comparable to those of hydroquinone, a well-known treatment for fading skin discolorations. Notably, tranexamic acid tends to be more tolerable than hydroquinone.

Consistent use of topical tranexamic acid, particularly in concentrations between 2-5%, has been shown to be safe, with visible improvements typically emerging after two to three months. Furthermore, this ingredient might help reduce redness in sensitive skin.

Because tranexamic acid is water-soluble, it works most effectively in products formulated with oil-soluble ingredients like tocopherol or plant oils, which aid in its absorption into the skin.
